San Saba River Adventures
I've never kayaked before. How hard is it?
You don't have to be an Olympic athlete to kayak, but you need to be in at
least decent physical condition and be ready to immerse yourself in nature.
Probably not immerse, literally ... our sit-on-top kayaks are stable and easy to
paddle. We'll show you what you need to know to get down the river safely.
But, sometimes boats flip. And that cool, clean river feels mighty good on a
hot summer day.

What should I bring?
Bathing suit, sunscreen, sunglasses (on a lanyard or cord), hat, good water
shoes (no flip-flops), any required medications and insect repellent. If fishing,
bring your fishing license (and driver's license or other photo ID), ultralight
fishing tackle or 6-wt or lighter fly rod. SSRA will provide drybags to keep
cameras, towels and extra clothing dry.

Can we keep fish from the river?
Water quality in the Menard Co. segment of the San Saba is typically very
good, and fish are fine to eat; however, we generally encourage anglers to
practice catch and release on this river. If a guest lands a trophy fish or a
large catfish (or two) and wishes to keep them for their own consumption, we'll
certainly help you do that.

How long are the trips?
We try to tailor our trips to guests' individual skill levels and interests. We can
arrange trips that last half a day, or last two days with overnight camping on
the river. Our typical package is a full 8-hour day on the water.

What about food and lodging in Menard?
We have three clean and affordable motels in town and three good
restaurants. Also, take time to check out our historic "Ditch Walk," the ruins of
the mid-18th century Presido de las Amarillas, the Menardville Museum and
nearby Fort McKavitt State Historical Site. For more information on food,
lodging and other attractions, visit:
